Located in North East Georgia, Gainesville is home to a variety of industries, colleges and healthcare facilities. Gainesville was also home to the late Bill Fields, a member of the "Great Eight", the US rowing team that won the gold medal in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Before his untimely death in 1992, Fields worked as a consultant to the Atlanta Olympics Organizing Committee. In this function, he was able to convince the team to use Lake Lanier as the site for the rowing, canoeing, and kayaking events.
This site is relatively close to my home and I vsisted it a couple of times for this project. It is well maintained and still used for rowing and other events.
